I hope some day my descendants will enjoy reading my work. I feel that telling their story honors them and keeps their memory alive, and that's important to me. Perhaps most of all, I enjoy learning about the lives of my ancestors. We end up finding 4th cousins who we are are very tangentially related to, but we bond over our shared interest in our ancestors and the process of genealogy research.įor me, genealogy is almost a perfect fit for my skills and interests: I believe strongly in the importance of family, I enjoy history and geography, I am trained as a lawyer so I can decipher the many legal documents that lead to important details, I enjoy the detective work involved in cracking hard cases, I enjoy the sense of completion of filling in a new branch on the tree, I enjoy writing and sharing my research with family members, I'm a skeptical person and have good critical reasoning skills, so I can spot a lot of errors in other people's research and try to correct them. I think most genealogists have a similar experience. To me, that is just inherently fascinating, and I have a hard time understanding people who don't feel that way (even though almost no one I know shares this passion, including my closest friends and family members). There were people I had never met but played an important role in determining who I was and the family culture I grew up in. I remember as a very small boy doing an elementary school family history project and finding it captivating.
I'm just entering middle age, so I can only speak for myself.

Gramps import gedcom software#
Is there software that could organize this all and make it easier? I'm not totally sure, but I'd be open to considering it. At some point, I'll upload PDFs of the chapters to the relevant people's pages.

I then update my primary tree (on ) with the results of my research, and link or upload the most important original documents there. In some cases, I disprove other people's unsupported theories, and in some cases I present a case for my own conclusions, noting any ambiguity or uncertainty. I work through and try to form these sources into narrative paragraphs as I piece together what is accurate, how they are connected to children/parents/spouses/etc. I organize an outline for the ancestors, fill in the details I can find as paragraphs, and pretty much have a footnote (or sometimes two) with every sentence with a source.įor a particularly tricky ancestor, it will start as just a list of sources or leads in roughly chronological order. This can't be done on an average computer but this is an example image from rendering the entire US Presidents Family Circles JSON file based on GEDCOM. If your graphics card/memory or CPU are not up to the size of the model you are attempting to view then it will not render. The only caveat to the above is your model size is limited based on the hardware that you render the model in. GEDCOM can be converted using a Service command line program to Family Circles JSON which can then be used directly with Viewer and Builder.Supports GEDCOM data files if you use the Service software.Software does assume a person can only have a single biological mother and father (no support for rendering adoption relations).Take a look at Family Circles a project of mine and see if that addresses what you had in mind. And it obviously plays nice with visualization tools for network graphs. It's a database not a visulaization but it may help with the relationships you are trying to manage. Because graphviz is a versatile general purpose graphing program for complex networks, I'd guess it could do anything you wanted wrt parent/child relationships.Īnother option you might pursue is putting your gedcom into a graph database like neo4j ( ). I've found it's sometime easier in graphviz to prune branches, or merge two trees. If gramps doesn't make exactly the graph I wanted, I sometimes take the intermediate graphviz output and modify it directly to get the picture I want. It uses graphviz ( ) for it's visualization engine. I'm not sure what you mean by 'singular parent child most software provides' so I can't comment on whether it will meet all your needs. It is opensource and written in python so you could even modify it to fit your needs if you were so inclined. My recommendation would be for you to try gramps.
